Sabeen shook with intense tremors as she sat huddled in the corner of the large bed, despite the thick blankets. She couldn’t say what possessed her to spill that history of hers to Pug.

Pug. Her captain. No, that wasn’t right. He wasn’t hers. He was the son of an earl and a baron with holdings.

“Sabeen?”

Part of her was shocked to hear his voice. The other part, not as much. She saw him standing by the door, illuminated by the flames flickering in her fireplace. The man there didn’t take long to locate her, and with a shove of the door—closing it—he approached. Pug didn’t speak as he put the glasses down to fill them each with a healthy portion. Exchanging bottle for the drinks, he joined her on the bed.

Sabeen took the offered glass and sipped. The burn tore down her throat, adding more tears to her eyes. The one on the bed with her was her captain again, not a baron. The clothing he’d worn on the ship covered him. The white shirt open at the neck, showing her his tanned skin and dark hair. Her breath hitched, and she forced her eyes away. With him, it never mattered she’d been witness to his shirtless body. Clothed or not, he still got a visceral reaction from her.

Pug leaned against the headboard, one knee bent as it supported his hand holding the drink.

“Why do you care so much for the children of the people who did such brutal things to you for years?”

She drank again. “For the very reason they are just children. No child is born evil; they are taught it.”

He drained his drink then slid over until he wrapped his arms around her. Sabeen had no energy or desire to struggle, even though she knew more questions would be inevitable.

“It was not just Mr. Stanton and his friends?”

Cold seeped into her bones. “Mrs. Stanton had parties, as well. Sometimes, I would go from one straight to the other.” He held her tightly, his lips on her temple.

“And your child?”

The first few fat tears fell; more followed. “I never got to hold him. Not when he was alive, anyway. Mrs. Stanton came in immediately after he had been born. Tore him from the arms of Sylvia, stared at me, and asked me if I had a name for him, my bastard child.”

“Had you chosen one?” His breath along her skin was warm.

Her throat drew tight. “Yes. I was going to call him…Stephen.”

He stiffened. “Like their son?”

Sabeen squeezed her eyes shut. “Mrs. Stanton called the overseer, John, in the small shack. He took my baby from her and lay him on the table. She looked at me, evil spilling from her gaze and said, ‘I cannot allow any child of my husband’s to survive if I did not bear them. I will not let your devil offspring survive. Kill it.’ John did. Took my baby from me and his life.”

She finished her drink, welcoming the burn this time. “The next
